IIT Bombay professor questioned in student death probe

Published 3 October 2026

Mumbai Crime Branch questioned Indian Institute of Technology Bombay professor Suryanarayana Doolla for about eight to 10 hours and recorded his statement in connection with student Sahil Wakode’s death, according to reports citing sources and an official. Doolla denied using casteist or derogatory language toward Wakode and said he followed institute procedures when dealing with him. The questioning took place at the IIT Bombay campus in Powai. The Crime Branch is investigating the circumstances surrounding Wakode’s death and allegations made by his family that he faced caste-based discrimination and mental harassment at the institute. The family named Doolla in its allegations. The claims have not been resolved, and the supplied accounts do not establish whether harassment occurred. Police are examining Doolla’s statement alongside accounts from other people and evidence collected during the investigation. An official said investigators had recorded statements from about 40 people, including Wakode’s family members, students, friends, and institute and hostel staff.
