EFCC Opens Awka Office for Anambra and Imo
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has opened a zonal directorate in Awka to serve Anambra and Imo, adding an operational base that the agency says will bring enforcement and preventive work closer to businesses, government institutions and residents in both states. EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede attended the opening on Friday, October 2, alongside Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma. House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas represented President Bola Tinubu at the ceremony. The commission described the office as an expansion of its capacity to investigate and prosecute financial crimes and to work with local authorities on protecting public funds and legitimate economic activity. Olukoyede said the agency’s role includes preventing fraud and identifying weaknesses in financial controls, as well as investigating cases and recovering proceeds of crime. He said the EFCC had begun monitoring Federation Account Allocation Committee releases to state and local governments to identify vulnerabilities before public resources are diverted. The accounts of the announcement provided no details on the monitoring’s coverage, duration or results.
