Australian athlete Joanna Wietrzy has apologized and retroactively withdrawn from a Hyrox fitness race in Beijing after defecating during the event and continuing to win, prompting the global fitness competition to change its rules. Wietrzy, the world No. 1 ranked women's singles athlete, was competing in the Women's Pro division on September 12 when the incident occurred. Viral footage showed the 22-year-old with fecal matter on her arms and legs as she continued the race, using shared equipment before finishing first. The event sparked widespread criticism online, particularly in China, over hygiene concerns and why organizers allowed her to continue. In a statement posted on Instagram on September 17, Wietrzy apologized to the people of China, her fellow competitors, spectators, and Hyrox organizers. "I felt completely fit and healthy at the start of the race, with no reason to expect any illness," she wrote. "Looking back, I regret the decision to not have stepped off the track. I recognise that I should have made a different choice." Wietrzy announced she had decided to retroactively withdraw from the race and forfeit the points she earned.
