Hurricane Polo Strengthens to Category 4 Off Mexico, Threatening Floods

Hurricane Polo intensified into a powerful Category 4 storm late Monday, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 mph as it churned in the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico. The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported that the storm, located about 330 miles south-southeast of Manzanillo, is forecast to potentially strengthen further into a Category 5 hurricane by Tuesday or Wednesday. Despite its core remaining offshore, Polo is expected to bring significant threats to southwestern Mexico. Forecasters predict the storm will deliver 4 to 8 inches of rain, with isolated totals up to 12 inches, to coastal states including Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco through Thursday. This heavy rainfall raises the risk of life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in mountainous areas. A tropical storm watch is in effect for a stretch of coast from south of Manzanillo in Colima state to Tecpan de Galeana in Guerrero state. The storm's track is forecast to take a sharp turn northwest, allowing it to skirt the Mexican coast for several days without making a direct landfall.
