HSBC Names Planned Hong Kong Stablecoin RedCoin
HSBC has named its planned Hong Kong-dollar stablecoin RedCoin, saying it will initially be used for transfers between individuals and payments to merchants before the bank considers corporate and institutional applications. The token has not been issued, and HSBC has not announced an exact launch date. It has said the planned release is in the second half of 2026. HSBC said it expects to offer initial access through PayMe and the HSBC HK Mobile Banking App. The bank has not disclosed which blockchain network RedCoin would use or provided a public token contract address. It said further information would be released in due course. The planned payment uses mark the first phase of a broader rollout. HSBC said corporate and institutional applications could follow later, but it has not set dates for those stages. The bank has tied RedCoin’s name to its heritage in Hong Kong and described the stablecoin as part of its digital-asset strategy. HSBC announced the name on September 30, following its receipt of a stablecoin issuer license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in April.
