Honda replaces F1 power unit leader amid Aston Martin struggles

Honda Racing Corporation announced a leadership change for its Formula 1 power unit development programme on Monday, September 14, 2026, replacing the project leader in a move it described as a planned transition to accelerate technical progress. The change comes as the Japanese manufacturer and its partner Aston Martin struggle through a difficult debut season under the sport's new 2026 regulations. Effective October 1, 2026, Yoichiro Fukao will succeed Tetsushi Kakuda as Large Project Leader of the F1 power unit programme. Fukao has served as Deputy Leader of the F1 Project and Head of the Software Division. Honda stated the reorganisation is designed to ensure the reliable transfer of technical expertise to the next generation of engineers and to establish a robust development framework ahead of further regulatory changes expected from 2027. The leadership shuffle follows a challenging start to the 2026 season for the Aston Martin-Honda partnership. The team has struggled with both performance and reliability from its power unit, sitting 10th in the constructors' championship with only three points scored across the season.
