Hodo Recalls 10,000 Cases of Tofu in 29 States Over Ink Contamination

Hodo, an Oakland-based food manufacturer, has voluntarily recalled more than 10,000 cases of its Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu due to potential contamination from printing ink that may have migrated from the product's packaging into the food itself. The recall, which was initiated on August 7, 2026, and gained wider public attention after appearing in a U.S. Food and Drug Administration enforcement report on August 31, affects 29 states and includes products with use-by dates extending through November 2026, meaning affected packages could still be in consumers' refrigerators. The company discovered the issue while scaling up production of the new tofu product and observed discoloration. Subsequent testing of the Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu in printed film packaging produced similar results, leading to the recall. Hodo is investigating the cause and evaluating whether the combination of chili oil and heat may have contributed to the potential migration of ink from the packaging film into the tofu. The recalled product is sold in 8-ounce packages under UPC code 850565007842.
