Heavy Rain Causes Delhi Waterlogging

Heavy rain lashed Delhi on Saturday, September 5, 2026, inundating several parts of the capital and causing significant disruptions to traffic and daily life. The downpour, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, led to severe waterlogging on major roads, including National Highway 48 near Indira Gandhi International Airport and stretches in areas like Sangam Vihar and Mahipalpur. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for the city, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day. Rainfall figures recorded between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday included 22 mm at Safdarjung, 25.2 mm at Palam, and 24.4 mm at Lodhi Road. This fresh spell of rain followed intense showers on Friday, which had also caused waterlogging and affected flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The water accumulation on Saturday led to slow traffic movement across numerous locations, with the Delhi Traffic Police issuing advisories to commuters. The situation was compounded by traffic restrictions and diversions planned for a motorcade rehearsal in connection with the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
