HBO Orders Five-Episode Girls Revival for 2027

Published 13 October 2026

HBO has ordered a five-episode revival of Girls, with creator and star Lena Dunham and four principal cast members set to return. Production is planned for 2027, about a decade after the original series ended. Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah Horvath and return as writer and director. Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells are also returning, playing Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna and Elijah, respectively. Judd Apatow will return as an executive producer. The five-episode limited series will follow the characters as they approach 40, according to Amy Gravitt, HBO’s head of comedy programming. The network has not announced a title, plot details, a release date or any additional casting. Dunham said in a statement that she had missed the characters but had struggled to imagine them in the present day. She said she had been willing to revisit the series only if there was a specific story to tell, adding that the idea came to her around her 40th birthday. The production start is set for 2027; some reports specify summer, while the network’s announcement gives the year without a season. No release timing has been provided.
