Harry Potter U.S. Book Title Reverts to Philosopher's Stone for HBO Tie-In

The official Harry Potter franchise is aligning the U.S. book title with its upcoming HBO television series by reverting to "Philosophers Stone" for a new tie-in edition. A new paperback of the first novel, featuring cover art from the HBO series, will be released globally in English on November 3, 2026. For this edition, publisher Scholastic is changing the title from "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" to "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," matching the original UK title and the name of the HBO series' first season. The change marks the end of a 28-year tradition in the United States. When the book was first published in the U.S. in 1998, Scholastic altered the title, reportedly believing "Philosopher" would not immediately communicate magic to American children. Author J.K. Rowling later expressed regret over the decision, stating in a 2001 interview that she agreed to it because she was grateful for the publication opportunity. The title difference also carried over to the 2001 film, requiring alternate takes to be filmed for dialogue.
