Hamilton summoned after Sepang incident with Bortoleto

Published 2 October 2026

Lewis Hamilton was summoned to the Formula 1 stewards after a second practice session incident with Gabriel Bortoleto at Sepang on October 2, with officials set to investigate whether the Ferrari driver impeded the Audi driver. The reports supplied no ruling, leaving any sporting consequence unclear. The incident occurred during FP2 while Hamilton was on a cooldown lap. Bortoleto approached from behind as Hamilton was moving slowly on the racing line. Bortoleto had to take avoiding action before passing, according to accounts of the episode, and complained over team radio that Hamilton had seen him coming but continued to block him. Hamilton told Ferrari over the radio that he could not see through his right-hand mirror and asked the team to keep him informed. One account described the mirror as broken. The stewards summoned Hamilton to explain what happened; the investigation was to determine whether his actions amounted to impeding another driver. The reports do not include the stewards’ decision or establish whether Hamilton received a penalty. They also inconsistently identify the event as the Malaysian Grand Prix or the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
