Goldman Board Discusses Waldron as Solomon Successor
Goldman Sachs’ board has discussed a possible succession plan under which President and Chief Operating Officer John Waldron would replace Chief Executive David Solomon around the end of 2027 or in 2028, according to a report cited by multiple accounts. The plan has not been approved, and Goldman says there is no definitive timeline for a leadership change. Tony Fratto, Goldman’s global head of communications, said the board regularly discusses succession and discloses those discussions in company filings. He characterized assertions about timing as speculation. Solomon remains chief executive, and any handover would require board approval; the timing could change. Under the reported proposal, Solomon could become executive chair for one to two years after leaving the CEO role. The account of the board discussions attributed the details to people familiar with the matter. No decision confirming the arrangement has been announced. Waldron, 57, has served as Goldman’s president and chief operating officer since October 2018, when Solomon became CEO. He joined the bank in 2000 and became co-head of investment banking in 2014.
