Gill urges India to improve fielding after ODI series win
India captain Shubman Gill said the team must improve its fielding and clarify its approach in the death overs after India won the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, despite losing the final match by five wickets. Gill’s assessment followed a series in which he scored 334 runs and was named Player of the Series. India won the opening two matches to secure the series before the West Indies chased down India’s 351 in the third ODI on Saturday, October 3. Gill made 110 in the first match and an unbeaten 223 in the second, then was dismissed for one in the decider. His 334 runs made him the series’ leading scorer. Gill said India had dropped about six or seven catches across the series, including an estimated three or four in the final match. Those figures were his estimates, not an independently verified count. He also said the team’s ground fielding needed to improve, arguing that missed chances and runs conceded in the field could make the bowlers’ task more difficult. The captain identified uncertainty over whether to attack or defend in the closing overs as another issue.
