Gaza strike kills mother as daughter is rescued from fire
A fire broke out in a Gaza City apartment after an Israeli strike on October 14, killing Reem Asaad Awad and leaving her daughter Maryam Ghanem injured. Palestinian journalist Ali al-Jaafrawi said he rescued the child from the burning apartment and was later overcome by smoke when he returned to help others. A medical source at al-Shifa Hospital identified Awad as 33 and said her body and two injured people, including a child, were taken to the hospital. Reports identified the child as Maryam, whose age was reported as two or three. Her condition after admission was not disclosed in one report. Al-Jaafrawi described entering the apartment amid flames and smoke, finding the girl and carrying her out to people who could take her to hospital. He said he went back into the building to try to rescue others and document the scene, but lost consciousness after inhaling smoke. Accounts of the rescue in multiple reports trace to his statement. The fire spread from the apartment to neighbouring flats, according to civil defence teams, which eventually brought it under control. Footage filmed at the scene showed the child surrounded by smoke and flames before she was carried out. Reports...
