GameStop Converts eBay Derivative to $5 Billion Equity Stake
GameStop announced on Monday that it has converted a previously disclosed derivative position into a direct equity investment in eBay, giving the video game retailer a nearly $5 billion stake in the online marketplace. The move, detailed in preliminary second-quarter results, signals a potential shift in GameStop's pursuit of eBay from a would-be acquirer to an influential shareholder. The company said it now holds approximately 43.4 million shares of eBay common stock, with a fair value of about $4.947 billion as of August 1. This investment was a major factor in GameStop's expected quarterly net income of $290 million to $310 million, which includes approximately $238 million in net gains from the eBay position. Those gains were partially offset by a loss of roughly $75 million on digital assets and related receivables. The investment comes after eBay rejected GameStop's $5.6 billion acquisition proposal earlier this year. GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen has argued that the two companies could combine their strengths in collectibles and trading cards, with GameStop's physical stores potentially serving as authentication hubs.
