FRSC reports 20 dead in Plateau multi-vehicle crash

Published 3 October 2026

A crash involving multiple vehicles at Hawan Kibo in Plateau State killed 20 people on Friday evening, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said. The agency attributed the collision to brake failure, while its later account described brake failure and loss of control as likely causes and said an investigation had been ordered. The crash occurred along the Hawan Kibo-Jos route in Riyom Local Government Area. In a statement issued Friday, FRSC public education officer Osondu Ohaeri said the collision happened at about 3:32 p.m. and involved four vehicles: a truck, a Toyota Corolla, a bus operated by Yankari Express and a motorcycle. An earlier account from the FRSC’s Plateau sector commander put the time at about 5 p.m. The reports therefore differ on the precise time. Ohaeri said 25 people were involved, with 20 men killed and five people injured. The injured were taken to Ryom General Hospital and Vom Christian Hospital, he said, and the bodies of those killed were taken to JUTH Mortuary. The FRSC said its rescue personnel cleared the obstruction and restored traffic on the affected highway section.
