France Imposes Environmental Fees on Ultrafast Fashion Platforms

France has begun imposing environmental fees on ultrafast fashion, targeting Chinese-founded e-commerce platforms such as Shein and Temu in a move aimed at curbing the sale of cheap, disposable clothing. The new surcharges, which took effect on September 2, 2026, are part of a broader legislative effort to address the environmental and economic impacts of the ultrafast fashion model. The penalties are calculated using a scoring system that considers the volume of apparel a brand lists online and the repairability of its garments. Fees start at 0.25 euros for smaller items like socks and underwear and rise to 12 euros for coats and jackets.
