Flooding Hits Asian Games Host City Nagoya

Record rainfall caused extensive flooding in Nagoya, Japan, the host city for the upcoming Asian Games, forcing the brief evacuation of hundreds of athletes and staff. The downpour on Tuesday saw the city record 104.5 millimeters of rain in a single hour, the highest ever observed in Nagoya. This deluge led to widespread flooding of roads and homes, stranding pedestrians and vehicles, and temporarily disrupting public transport, including bus and subway services. Approximately 400 athletes and staff members who were housed in converted container-style accommodations at the Garden Pier area were moved to higher ground as the rain intensified. They were able to return to their temporary housing units after an evacuation order was lifted approximately two hours later. Officials reported that while some competition venues experienced leaking roofs and rainwater ingress, no major structural damage occurred. City officials have expressed confidence that the Games will proceed as planned. Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa stated on Wednesday that the flooding had not caused serious damage to the Asian Games infrastructure.
