Final Fantasy Resonance HD2D Demo Showcased at Gamescom 2026

Published 4 September 2026

Square Enix has unveiled the first Final Fantasy game to utilize its popular HD2D art style, with Final Fantasy Resonance set for release on October 22, 2026. The title, which adapts the story from the 2015 mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, was showcased in a hands-on demo at Gamescom 2026, revealing a turn-based combat system and a world that blends nostalgic pixel art with modern 3D environments. The game is positioned as a return to classic role-playing mechanics for the franchise, moving away from the action-oriented combat of recent mainline entries. Resonance features a traditional turn-based system without the Active Time Battle gauge, allowing players to plan their moves based on a visible turn order. Combat includes familiar series elements such as Limit Breaks, summoning Espers, and a new "Resonance" attack that serves as a powerful party-wide ability. A key new feature is the "Visions" system, which allows players to recruit crystallized essences of iconic heroes from across the Final Fantasy series, such as Cloud Strife, Noctis, and Lightning, and equip them to party members to grant additional skills and elemental affinities.
