Filmmaker Links Nollywood YouTube Shift to Exchange Rates

Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has highlighted the significant role of currency exchange rates in driving the migration of Nollywood producers to YouTube, while asserting that the platform cannot match the financial returns of major streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video. Afolayan explained that while YouTube offers greater accessibility and flexibility for filmmakers, its revenue potential is considerably lower than that of established global streamers. Speaking in a recent interview, Afolayan attributed the growing interest in YouTube among Nigerian filmmakers primarily to the country's exchange rate. He noted that earning advertising revenue in U.S. dollars, while production costs are largely incurred in naira, makes YouTube earnings appear particularly attractive. Afolayan provided an illustrative example where one million views could potentially generate around $10,000, a substantial sum when converted to naira at the current rate of approximately 1,400 to 1.
