FIA President Intervenes to Keep Alonso in Formula 1

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is actively intervening to keep Fernando Alonso in Formula 1, meeting with Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll and planning further talks with the driver. Ben Sulayem stated at the New Economy Forum in Madrid that Alonso's potential retirement due to performance issues is "not acceptable" and that he will work to ensure the two-time world champion does not leave the sport under such circumstances. The FIA president revealed he had already met with Stroll to discuss a plan to improve Aston Martin's performance and keep Alonso. He also described a personal conversation with Alonso at the Italian Grand Prix, where he asked the driver what he wanted the FIA to do to improve results. Ben Sulayem said he saw Alonso "very sad" and emphasized that it is unacceptable for a champion of his stature to be in last place on home soil. Alonso has indicated that his decision on continuing in F1 for 2027 depends on understanding the impact of the new engine regulations, which he has criticized. He has also mentioned the World Endurance Championship as an option should he leave Formula 1.
