Faber to stop supplying Sally Rooney books in the UK
Faber will stop supplying Sally Rooney’s books in the United Kingdom, saying it cannot pass on her UK earnings under current legislation. Rooney agreed with the publisher’s decision, which applies to her work in every format. Faber said it will continue selling her books in other territories. The publisher said UK law had created circumstances in which it could not pass earnings from UK sales to Rooney. It described selling an author’s work without being able to pass on the proceeds as untenable. Faber and Rooney presented the withdrawal as a joint decision. Rooney said her public commitment to continue supporting Palestine Action had led to concerns about fulfilling UK publishing contracts. In a statement, she said that doing so could constitute a serious criminal offence. That is Rooney’s assessment of the legal risk; Faber likewise cited the effect of current legislation on payments. The reports do not independently establish that publication itself would be a criminal offence. Palestine Action was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in the UK in July 2025. Rooney, an Irish author, had said she intended to support the group with proceeds from her work.
