F1 Commission Approves Shorter Race Distances for 2027 Season

The Formula 1 Commission has approved a reduction in the official race distance for Grand Prix events, cutting the standard length from 305 kilometers to 290 kilometers. The decision, finalized during a meeting in London, is set to take effect for the 2027 season and is directly linked to the introduction of new power unit regulations. The change was announced by the FIA, the sport's governing body, and Formula 1. According to the FIA, the reduction corresponds to a decrease of approximately two or three laps at most circuits. The adjustment is a consequence of the 2027 power unit rules, which will increase the output of the internal combustion engine while reducing the contribution from the hybrid electrical system. Under the new regulations, the internal combustion engine's power output will rise to 420kW, while the MGUK (Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic) will be capped at 300kW. To support the higher engine power, fuel flow to the combustion engine will increase by five percent.
