Ekurhuleni death tally reaches 11 as police probe cases

Police said Sunday that a woman’s body found in an open field in Ekurhuleni brought to 11 the number of women discovered dead in the municipality over 10 weeks, including eight found during September. Authorities said the cases have not been formally linked and are being investigated individually. The latest body was spotted around midday on September 27 by a security company vehicle patrolling the area, which alerted police, according to police spokeswoman Brigadier Brenda Muridili. The woman’s identity, age and cause of death had not been established in the reports. The discovery came a day after a woman’s body was found near a cemetery in the municipality. Provincial police chief Tommy Mthombeni said the victim appeared to have been killed with stones; a postmortem examination was expected to establish the cause of death. Police said a man linked to the cemetery killing was arrested in Limpopo after leaving the area. His arrest brought to four the number of people in custody in connection with the killings, according to police. The reports did not detail the evidence linking him to the case or establish whether he had been charged.
