Dow Rises as S&P 500 and Nasdaq Fall
Wall Street ended Monday, October 12, with a mixed finish as the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite declined. Investors weighed higher oil prices against the start of corporate earnings reports and inflation data expected later in the week. The Dow gained 195.60 points, or 0.38%, to close at 51,850.55, its third consecutive advance. The S&P 500 slipped 0.06% to 7,807.24, while the Nasdaq fell 0.44% to 27,245.90. The session followed a muted opening, when the Dow and S&P 500 edged higher and the Nasdaq moved slightly lower. Brent crude rose above $106 a barrel. Reports linked the increase to geopolitical uncertainty, including strikes at Riyadh’s international airport over the weekend. Higher oil prices can support energy companies while raising fuel and other costs for businesses and consumers, adding to concerns about inflation and its effect on interest rates. The U.S. Treasury market was closed for Columbus Day, limiting access to normal same-day trading signals from government bond yields.
