Dolly Parton's Sister Reveals Secret Cancer Battle

Published 10 September 2026

Dolly Parton's sister, Stella Parton, revealed that the iconic country music star kept her cancer diagnosis private to avoid causing distress to the public and some of her relatives. Parton died on August 25 at the age of 80, with her publicity team later confirming the cause was a brief battle with cancer. Stella Parton shared these details in an interview, explaining that her sister's desire for privacy was deeply rooted in her personality. "Dolly did not want anybody to tell that, because Dolly could not bear negative things," Stella Parton stated. "And she would not have wanted her fans worried about it. She didn't want a lot of the family worried about it." Stella clarified that while some closer relatives were aware of Parton's illness, not every family member knew. She added that Parton's intention was to prevent people from feeling sad or worried, believing that the outpouring of love after her death would ultimately make her family feel better. Parton had previously acknowledged health issues publicly, including a cancellation of a Las Vegas show in May 2026 due to kidney stones.
