DIRCO clears High Commissioner on Zuma visit

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has concluded its internal review concerning former South African President Jacob Zuma's private visit to India from June 25 to June 27, 2026. The department stated that the assistance provided to Zuma was limited to standard protocol and logistical support, and that its High Commission in India did not facilitate any private meetings between the former president and businessman Ajay Gupta. DIRCO was informed by the Presidency on June 19, 2026, about Zuma's upcoming private visit and requested assistance with necessary protocol and logistical arrangements. In line with established practice for former presidents, DIRCO subsequently notified the South African High Commission in New Delhi to provide customary support. This support included ceremonial lounge arrangements, airport courtesies, and liaison with host government authorities. High Commissioner Anil Sooklal received Zuma upon his arrival in India and provided similar assistance upon his departure, as per protocol. However, information from the High Commission indicates that no substantive engagement between Zuma and Ajay Gupta was facilitated during the visit.
