Delhi police stop opposition march short of Supreme Court
Opposition leaders and supporters marched through central Delhi on Monday to protest electoral-roll revisions and demand action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police stopped the procession at barricades on Bhagwan Das Road before it could reach the Supreme Court, while opposition leaders said they were pursuing a legal challenge to the Election Commission of India’s actions. The march, organised under the INDIA bloc’s March for Democracy banner, began after opposition figures and supporters gathered in the capital. Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader and leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, joined the procession with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition politicians, including leaders from regional parties. Student groups and activists also took part. The crowd moved along central Delhi roads toward the court, where police had erected multiple barricades and deployed security personnel. Some leaders climbed onto a vehicle as the procession came to a halt. The march’s stated aim was to submit a petition concerning alleged irregularities in electoral-roll revisions and the functioning of the Election Commission.
