Danny Boyle Confirms AI Use In Film Ink

Director Danny Boyle has confirmed the use of artificial intelligence in his new film, "Ink," which recently premiered on the festival circuit. Boyle stated that approximately 30 seconds of the film incorporates AI-generated imagery, primarily to animate old photographs and create digital animals. The Oscar-winning director revealed the details in an interview with Vanity Fair at the Telluride Film Festival. He explained that AI was employed to reanimate historical images, including those of the Kray twins and former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, bringing them to life for select sequences. Additionally, AI was used to generate mice that appear in the newsroom scenes of "The Sun" newspaper, a subject central to the film's narrative. Boyle noted this approach allowed him to avoid the use of real animals, referencing a past controversy with PETA over the use of chimpanzees in his 2002 film "28 Days Later." "Ink," starring Jack O'Connell and Guy Pearce, explores the rise of British tabloid journalism and Rupert Murdoch's efforts to establish The Sun as a rival to the Daily Mirror. The film is based on a play by James Graham and also features Claire Foy.
