CREW sues over Kushner’s volunteer diplomatic role
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a lawsuit seeking to restrict Jared Kushner’s volunteer diplomatic work unless he receives Senate confirmation or provides financial disclosures. The complaint, filed October 14, 2026, argues that Kushner exercises significant government authority without meeting requirements that apply to federal officials. The court has not ruled on the claims. CREW says Kushner’s role as an envoy and negotiator for the Trump administration should be treated as a government position subject to the Constitution’s Appointments Clause and federal ethics laws. The group seeks an order barring him from serving in the role without Senate confirmation, or requiring him to disclose his finances during his government service. The complaint alleges that Kushner has taken part in high-level diplomatic work while maintaining private investment interests that create potential conflicts. CREW argues that the public should be able to assess whether those interests overlap with his official activities. Its claims have not been established in court.
