Consensys Splits MetaMask into Two Companies
Consensys Software Inc. is undergoing a significant restructuring, splitting its operations into two distinct entities: a consumer-focused company that will operate under the MetaMask brand, and a newly formed company retaining the Consensys name for its institutional and protocol infrastructure businesses. The formal separation is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026. Under the new structure, Ethereum cofounder Joseph Lubin will serve as chairman and CEO of the rebranded MetaMask. This entity will concentrate on mass-consumer products, expanding beyond its origins as an Ethereum wallet into a broader financial platform. MetaMask has reported over 100 million downloads globally and facilitated trillions of dollars in cumulative transaction volume, according to company statements. Its roadmap includes developing an Open Money platform with features like payments, savings, trading, and investing, exemplified by its recently launched Money Account. The new Consensys entity will house the company's institutional and protocol operations, including technologies such as Linea, Besu, and Teku. Mike Kriak will lead this company as CEO, with David Cunningham as president.
