Climate Change Linked to Deadly Nepal Glacier Collapse

A catastrophic rock and glacier collapse on Langtang Lirung mountain in Nepal on August 26, 2026, killed over 1,300 people and left more than 5,000 missing, according to official reports. Scientists from the World Weather Attribution collaboration have concluded that human-induced climate change, through glacier thinning and permafrost thaw, destabilized the Himalayan slope, making the collapse more likely. The study found that decades of warming have pushed the freezing line upward by about 100 meters per decade, exposing previously frozen rock to thaw conditions. Glaciers in the region have been losing mass at a rate equivalent to over half a meter of thinning each year, further weakening mountain structures. The collapse involved an estimated 110 to 116 million cubic meters of material, tearing away a 2.2 square kilometer section of the mountain face and triggering a debris flood that traveled at speeds up to 188 kilometers per hour. While climate change played a significant role, scientists noted that a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in 2015 may have also weakened the bedrock, though its precise contribution remains unconfirmed.
