Cause of Russian Lab Worker’s Death Remains Unknown
Darya Shipilova, a 28-year-old employee of Russia’s Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute, died after developing severe pneumonia, while Russian authorities say tests found no pathogen connecting her illness to her laboratory work. Plague has not been confirmed, and officials have reported no evidence of a laboratory accident or wider outbreak. The cause of Shipilova’s pneumonia remains unknown. Russian health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said testing found no microorganisms associated with her professional activity. It also said commissions found no accident involving dangerous pathogens at the institute. The authorities have not publicly identified what caused the illness. About 200 people who may have had contact with Shipilova were initially placed under observation. Rospotrebnadzor later reported that roughly 90 had been released; an earlier update said 60 had been released. These figures reflect updates at different times. Authorities said they had found no plague cases among contacts. The World Health Organization has requested more information from Russian authorities.
