Caltrans Closes PCH Lane After Hillside Crack Near Laguna Beach

Published 14 October 2026

Caltrans closed one southbound lane of Pacific Coast Highway near Laguna Beach after a crack was observed in the coastal hillside below the road, as officials began assessing the slope and considering repairs. The closure, described as a precaution, covers the stretch between Reef Point Drive and Irvine Cove Drive. Laguna Beach officials said they did not know when the lane would reopen. Caltrans said it would remain closed until repairs are complete, but the agency had not yet determined what work would be needed. Aerial footage showed a fracture in the slope between the highway and the ocean. The crack’s confirmed length, depth and cause had not been established, according to city officials. Caltrans spokesperson Christianne Smith said the agency was reviewing surveys and drone footage to determine a repair approach. Recent high surf and storm activity have affected parts of the Southern California coast. A Laguna Beach spokesperson said storm surges could have eroded the base of the slope, but officials had not confirmed that explanation as the cause of the crack.
