Caleb Williams questionable as Bears plan to start Bagent
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams returned to limited practice Friday, October 9, and was listed as questionable for the team’s Week 5 game against the Green Bay Packers. The Bears nevertheless planned to start Tyson Bagent on Sunday as Williams continued recovering from a Grade 2 right hamstring strain. Williams had missed Chicago’s previous two games after injuring his hamstring in a September 20 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. His limited practice was his first official practice appearance since the injury. A questionable designation did not confirm that he would play against Green Bay, and coach Ben Johnson had previously said the quarterback would be unavailable for the game. Johnson said Williams was gradually increasing his running and throwing during rehabilitation. The team was advancing his work step by step and checking for setbacks, he said. Williams had resumed throwing, but the sources did not report that he had returned to full-speed running or received medical clearance to play. The Bears’ Week 5 plan was for Bagent to start against the Packers. Chicago had won both games without Williams, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-7 and the New York Jets 23-12.
