Bungie Delays Marathon Update to December, Abandons Seasonal Model

Published 15 September 2026

Bungie has delayed the next major content update for its extraction shooter Marathon from September 22 to December 8, announcing a significant shift in its development strategy. The studio is abandoning a "strict seasonal schedule" to provide its team with greater flexibility to build, test, and refine features before release. The December 8 update, titled "Symbiosis," will introduce Marathon's first permanent PvE mode, a new Runner shell, a social space with a firing range, and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. Bungie described the update as "an important milestone for Marathon and the beginning of a broader evolution through March and beyond." Before the December launch, a smaller update on October 6 will refresh the Nightfall content, reset progression and the game economy, and bring back the Vault Breaker PvE mode for a limited time. Bungie stated the October refresh was necessary because issues with the current season "accelerated some players into the endgame while leaving others behind." The delay comes as Marathon faces significant challenges, with concurrent player numbers on Steam averaging fewer than 2,000 peak players.
