Borno APC candidate convoy attacked by terrorists

The convoy of Mustapha Gubio, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, was attacked by suspected terrorists on Thursday afternoon along a highway in the northern part of the state. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM near the Kareto community on the Gubio-Kareto-Damasak route. Gubio and his entourage were returning to the state capital, Maiduguri, after a thank-you visit to party supporters in Damasak. The visit followed his emergence as the APC's consensus candidate for the governorship in the upcoming 2027 elections. According to official confirmations on Friday, September 4, 2026, the attackers, identified as suspected Boko Haram or Boko Haram-ISWAP terrorists, ambushed the convoy. Reports indicate the insurgents planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along the road and also fired rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and engaged in sporadic gunfire. A combined team of security personnel, including the police, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Services, Civilian Joint Task Force, and local vigilantes, swiftly responded to the attack.
