Bloomsbury Founder Nigel Newton Plans CEO Exit

Published 8 September 2026

Bloomsbury Publishing founder and chief executive Nigel Newton plans to step down from his leadership role after four decades at the helm of the Harry Potter publisher. The company announced Tuesday a five-year succession plan that will see Newton oversee the appointment of his successor, who is expected to be named within the next two years. Newton, 71, will transition to the role of executive chairman for the first three years of the new CEO's tenure, before moving to non-executive chairman in 2031. Newton co-founded Bloomsbury in 1986 and guided its growth into a global publishing success, notably acquiring the rights to J.K. Rowling's first "Harry Potter" book after it had been rejected by several other publishers. This decision proved pivotal, propelling Bloomsbury into becoming one of the United Kingdom's most recognized publishing houses. The "Harry Potter" series has since spawned multibillion-dollar franchises, including blockbuster films and an upcoming HBO series. Bloomsbury has also recently focused on backing bestselling authors such as Sarah J. Maas, a prominent figure in the rapidly expanding "romantasy" genre.
