Australia bans AI-generated songs from national music charts

Published 25 August 2026

Australia's national music charts will no longer feature songs that are largely or wholly created by artificial intelligence, following a new policy from the Australian Recording Industry Association. The updated code of practice, announced on August 25, 2026, takes effect from the chart dated Monday, August 31, and requires all releases to be "substantially human made" to be eligible for the ARIA Charts. The move makes ARIA the first national chart body to implement formal eligibility rules for AI-generated music, aligning with global principles set by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry in July.
