Apple says iPhone Duo display cover layer is replaceable
Apple says the iPhone Duo’s nanotexture cover layer above its foldable inner display can be replaced, offering customers a way to renew the layer that helps reduce the screen’s crease. Apple Vice President of Hardware Engineering Kate Bergeron described the feature in an interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi. Reports citing Apple service information put the replacement price at $19 for U.S. customers with AppleCare coverage. Bergeron said Apple had done substantial engineering work to help the layer wear well and preserve its performance. She described the layer as replaceable, saying it could be peeled off and replaced. The cover layer sits above the inner display and is intended to help minimize the appearance of the crease where the screen folds. The $19 figure applies to covered U.S. customers. Apple has not disclosed the price for customers without AppleCare, and a Canadian replacement price has not been reported. The available information also does not establish whether customers can safely replace the layer themselves.
