Anthropic Models Three AI Economic Futures for 2030

Artificial intelligence could reshape the U.S. economy by 2030, presenting three distinct scenarios ranging from modest growth to extreme disruption, according to a new framework and interactive tool released by Anthropic. The AI research company has outlined potential futures that explore AI's impact on gross domestic product (GDP), unemployment, and wages, but emphasizes these are not predictions and assigns no probabilities to them. The scenarios are designed to inform debate about AI's evolving capabilities and adoption rates. The "modest change" scenario suggests AI will have a minor impact, adding less than half a point to GDP by 2030 and increasing unemployment by a tenth of a point, comparable to the internet's gradual economic influence. In contrast, the "substantial change" scenario envisions AI capable of handling half of all knowledge work by 2030, leading to GDP growth twice the normal rate and an overall unemployment rate around 4.6% to 5%. Knowledge worker wages in this scenario are projected to remain flat or slightly decline.
