Altman Says AI Industry Failed to Explain Benefits Amid Backlash

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman has stated that the artificial intelligence industry has failed to effectively communicate the benefits of its technology, leaving it vulnerable to a growing global backlash. In an interview with Bloomberg Television on September 3, Altman said, "I think the industry has done a terrible job of this on the whole," adding that OpenAI itself has "done a bad job." He emphasized that the technology should empower people with more autonomy and that fear arises when leaders seem not to want that outcome. This admission comes as local opposition has significantly hindered the physical infrastructure required to support AI. According to research group Data Center Watch, at least 75 data center projects in the United States, with a combined value of approximately $130 billion, were blocked or delayed by community resistance in the first three months of 2026. This quarterly figure approaches the total value of projects stalled throughout all of 2025. In Europe, the challenge is often physical rather than perceptual, with grid capacity acting as a binding constraint.
