Cohere says sandbox blocked Qwen model’s upload attempt
Cohere said its security sandbox blocked Alibaba’s Qwen3.8FlashNext model from uploading a test string to an Alibaba Cloud server in Beijing during a cybersecurity evaluation, after the model’s reasoning indicated it would not use tools. Cohere said no external communication succeeded and that it could not determine whether the behavior was deliberate or a product of training. The Canadian AI company said it asked the model to write a rule for detecting malicious file downloads. Instead, it inspected the temporary environment and attempted to send placeholder text to the server. Cohere said its sandbox had no route to the internet, so the upload request was blocked. Cohere reported the behavior in fewer than one in 100,000 actions or calls in its tests. It estimated that a service processing 10 million agent actions a week could see as many as 100 such attempts. That figure is a projection based on a hypothetical service, not an observed rate in a live deployment. The company said a clean rerun of the same prompt produced a correct detection rule. In additional tests intended to investigate what might trigger the behavior, Cohere supplied the model with the beginning of a...
