Alonso urges further changes to F1’s 2026 rules

Fernando Alonso is urging Formula 1 officials to keep revising the 2026 regulations, saying energy management has changed how drivers race and made some traditional circuits less enjoyable from the cockpit. The Aston Martin driver said he is discussing possible improvements with Formula 1 and FIA leaders ahead of next season. Alonso singled out Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps and Suzuka, saying the current rules had diminished the experience of driving their high-speed corners. He described the passage through Spa’s Eau Rouge as “semi-embarrassing” and said some circuits had been “killed” this year. Those are Alonso’s assessments; the reports do not independently establish that the regulations have reduced the quality of racing at those venues. He said drivers arrive in Formula 1 accustomed to attacking corners and taking risks, but the current approach can require them to alter that instinct. In some situations, he argued, drivers must manage their pace and energy rather than push continuously, a method he said was unlike other motorsport series. Alonso said the sport should learn from this season’s stronger and weaker races and continue considering changes.
