Zheng stuns Swiatek in U.S. Open comeback

Olympic gold medallist Zheng Qinwen staged a remarkable comeback on Monday to stun six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-3 and advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. The Chinese qualifier, ranked 121st in the world, recovered from a 0-5 deficit in the opening set on Arthur Ashe Stadium, winning seven consecutive games to take the set. She then broke Swiatek twice in the second set to secure the victory. This comeback mirrored Zheng's performance in her previous match, where she trailed Madison Keys 0-5 in the deciding set before winning the final seven games to advance. Zheng, a former world number four, has been working her way back into form after elbow surgery last year, which sidelined her for significant portions of the 2025 season. Her current run of seven consecutive wins in New York includes three victories in qualifying. Swiatek, the eighth seed and 2022 U.S. Open champion, had entered the match in strong form, having won 14 of her previous 15 tour-level matches and progressing through the tournament without dropping a set. She received medical treatment for her left thigh during the second set.
