Yemen Conflict Escalates With 68 Dead, Houthis Control Red Sea Coast

Fighting between Yemen's Houthi rebels, government forces, and Saudi Arabia has escalated sharply, with at least 68 people killed in a 24-hour period and over 100,000 displaced, according to military sources and the International Organisation for Migration. The violence marks a significant intensification of the conflict that reignited in July after the collapse of a 2022 truce. The latest clashes saw Houthi forces launch missile and drone attacks in southwestern Yemen, killing at least 23 government soldiers, a Yemeni official reported. Houthi military sources, in turn, stated that 40 of their fighters were killed in Saudi airstrikes and ground fighting. The casualty figures were provided by partisan military sources from each side. The conflict has now spilled directly into Saudi territory. Saudi Arabia's civil defence agency reported that a Yemeni national was killed in the Taif governorate on Thursday from shrapnel of an intercepted Houthi drone. Two others were injured, and material damage occurred to buildings and vehicles. This was the first death recorded inside Saudi Arabia since the recent hostilities began. The incident followed a major accusation from Riyadh.
