Yankees leave Aaron Judge off Wild Card roster

The New York Yankees left Aaron Judge off their 26-player roster for the American League Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox, ruling the injured captain out for the entire best-of-three round. The decision means Judge cannot appear in any game against Boston, though the Yankees could consider adding him to a later-round roster if they advance and he recovers sufficiently. Manager Aaron Boone said Judge had not shown he was ready for the demands of postseason play. Judge took live batting practice during a workout Monday, but Boone said the team’s evaluation also involved strength and conditioning work with trainers. After speaking with Judge and trainers following the workout, Boone concluded he was not yet ready to contribute, while describing the session as a sign of progress. Boone said he did not know when Judge might become an option. Judge is recovering from a moderate right calf strain. He had sought to play in the Wild Card round and, according to Boone, wanted to return as an outfielder. But being left off the active roster means he cannot pinch-hit or otherwise take part in the series.
