Xi Arrives for U.S. Visit as Trade Truce Is Extended

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the United States on September 23 for a state visit hosted by President Donald Trump, as the two governments extended their trade truce until January 10, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Trump and first lady Melania Trump greeted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. The arrival ceremony included a red carpet and military honors. Xi was visiting at Trump’s invitation, according to reports of the arrival. Bessent said the United States and China had agreed to extend the Busan trade truce. In an interview, he said the arrangement, which had been due to expire November 10, would instead run until January 10. The extension was announced as the leaders prepared for substantive talks scheduled for September 24. The agenda described in reports includes trade, technology and security, with Taiwan and artificial intelligence among the issues expected to be raised.
