Wrigley volleyball debut suspended for slick court

Wrigley Field hosted its first-ever volleyball matches on Sunday, September 6, 2026, but the historic event was marred by slippery court conditions that led to the suspension of the nightcap between No. 1 Nebraska and Missouri. The Big TenSEC Volleyball Challenge Week concluded with a doubleheader at the iconic Chicago ballpark, drawing a crowd of 43,067, the second-largest attendance in Wrigley Field's 112-year history. The opening match saw No. 3 Kentucky defeat No. 13 Penn State in four sets without incident. However, as the second match between top-ranked Nebraska and Missouri commenced, moisture began accumulating on the court, creating hazardous conditions. Players from both teams, along with coaches and event staff, attempted to dry the surface with towels and even removed court decals in an effort to make play possible. Despite these efforts, the condensation persisted, leading to multiple stoppages. The first set was halted after only three points, and play was again stopped later in the set with Nebraska leading 11-7. After an extended delay and attempts to rectify the situation, officials ultimately suspended the match due to player safety concerns.
