Wolff rejects claims Mercedes favours Antonelli over Russell
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff rejected claims that his team is favouring Kimi Antonelli over George Russell, saying both drivers would continue to receive equal opportunities in the Formula 1 title fight. Speaking ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix on Friday, October 9, Wolff called the allegations “brainless” and said it made no sense to suggest the team could cause a driver’s engine failure or deliberately disadvantage one of its racers. He said Mercedes had always aimed to provide both drivers with equal equipment. The accusations circulated on social media after Russell’s engine failure in Malaysia last week. Reports said the problem left him 84 points behind Antonelli and meant he would take a grid penalty in Singapore for exceeding his season’s power-unit allocation. The points gap and penalty have added to speculation about the team’s treatment of its drivers, but the reports provide no evidence that Mercedes deliberately caused the failure or sought to undermine Russell. Wolff said the team would maintain its approach even though Antonelli was in a stronger mathematical position to win the championship.
